Cumming, GA - Day 1
Sunday, May 8
Happy Mother’s Day! Andi, Tory and Aden really showered me with love today.
Andi and I started our day by watching the livestream broadcast from our church back home in Wisconsin. Then, Andi got the kids showered and fed while I pushed play on my workout outside the camper.
When I came back inside, Tory and Aden proudly displayed cards and flowers as my Mother’s Day gift. Aden wrote me a poem and they had each painted me a flower pot. It truly is the thought that counts, and when I see these gifts it reminds me how much Tory loves to craft and how far Aden’s reading and writing has come in the past year. It makes me proud of his hard work.
Andi and I packed up the RV and rolled out of Morganton Point Campground shortly thereafter. We didn’t hook the Jeep to the back to the back of the RV because we needed to get gas and refill our RV propane at Tractor Supply in town. It was a short 10-minute drive over to the store in Blue Ridge.
Unfortunately, the propane valve was broken at TSC (even though Andi called the store beforehand to confirm they were selling propane), so the employee directed us to another Tractor Supply store in the next town over called Elljay.
Andi drove the RV with the kids inside, and I followed behind in the Jeep. I suppose this was a Mother’s Day gift in and of itself — time alone in the car to listen to whatever I wanted on the radio. Alone time doesn’t happen much in family RV travel!
The TSC parking lot in Elljay was super congested with cars and customers purchasing Mother’s Day flowers for their yards and gardens. Andi maneuvered the RV into the lot near the propane tank. After waiting another 20 minutes to be served, an employee at this store said they were out of propane, so we wouldn’t be able to fill our RV tank at their store either. Ugh!
Onto the next TSC store in Jasper, GA. We were slowly making our way south toward our next campground by slowing stopping at all these TSC stores! Third time was a charm in Jasper — we were able to get propane for the RV and a lunch recommendation in town.
Next, we headed into downtown Jasper for lunch. Not much was open in this cute, north Georgia town but a restaurant called Mulehouse. The restaurant was busy, but not completely packed at 2:00pm. We were seated at a table inside and ordered off their limited Mother’s Day brunch menu. Southerners love brunch! That much we’ve determined on this RV road trip.
Our service was fast and friendly at Mulehouse, and the staff even gave moms in the restaurant a free carnation flower which was an unexpected surprise.
After lunch, the four of us walked around downtown Jasper to check out the town. It was cute!
Around 3:00pm, we made our way to Sawnee Campground in Cumming, Georgia. This campground is located on the popular Lake Lanier. Andi did his research beforehand, and booked us a primo spot on a peninsula. It was beautiful! Maybe one of the most beautiful spots we’ve ever camped.
After we plugged the RV into power and water, it was time to drive over to my cousin Tara’s house for dinner in John’s Creek. We love visiting family and friends when we’re passing through the area, and Tara graciously invited us over for a Mother’s Day BBQ this evening. They had a busy weekend with First Communion and kids sports, so we appreciated them making time for us.
Of course, Tory and Aden always have a blast hanging out with their cousins, and it was wonderful to catch up with my Aunt Cindy, Uncle Bob, cousin Tara and her husband Henry. We love spending time with their family & the time together always goes by so quickly.
Henry made a delicious spread of cedar-plank salmon, mussels, clams, and shrimp with grilled broccoli and potatoes. He even made us a “to-go” box because he knew we were living on the road which was super thoughtful.
Our campground was a short 30-minute drive from Tara’s and we made it back just before the gates closed for the evening. What a wonderful Mother’s Day I had in Georgia with family.
PS — Mother’s Day marks 4 years since we started RVing! Happy RV-iversary to us!
