Wekiva Falls, FL

When Andi and I mapped out our Florida RV adventure, we thought about all the places we wanted to visit and knew the end of our trip would take us right by that famous mouse house in Orlando. Did we want to make to Disney a part of our adventure? Our kids are the perfect ages for it, but truth of the matter is that Andi is NOT a Disney fan and navigating the busy theme park with our RV wouldn’t be easy. Until the very last minute, we researched and considered options like staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness RV Campground but in the end decided to skip the hustle & bustle (and the headache) all together.
Instead, we opted for a night at Wekiva Falls in Sorrento, Florida — an RV resort located between Daytona Beach and Orlando with swimming, wildlife, kayaking and more. Saturday morning, we left Flagler and made the hour-long drive there.
I can’t say this type of resort is exactly our cup of tea either. It was a really big place, and camping sites were stacked on top of one another. I think we prefer more of the boondocking / state parks vibe, with lots of nature and privacy.
In any event, we made lunch once we got settled and then headed off to check out the natural sulfur spring and pool. This in itself was quite the site -- a naturally-occurring sulfur spring — that smelled like rotten eggs! — right in the center of the campground with two water slides and a beach. I was hoping we’d see some kids swimming there so Tory and Aden would have someone to play with but being “winter” in Florida, the springs and the pool were both empty. On the bright side, we had the place to ourselves!
There’s a full activity calendar at Wekiva Falls, so the Tory, Aden and I decided to check out the kids craft time that afternoon. They had fun making Christmas ornaments and painting decorations for the cardboard gingerbread house that would be displayed in the events center.
Later, we had dinner at the RV and then we sat outside together until the sun went down. Our evening wasn’t over yet though! Kids karaoke was taking place at the Wekiva Falls events center that evening, and Tory has her mind set on participating. She spent an hour laying on her bed in the RV, writing her very own song to sing, and then the four of us headed over to the events center so she could perform it. I’m not sure she even knew what karaoke was, and she seems so nervous when we got there. When it was her turn, she walked up to the stage, held the microphone and sang her original song. We were so proud of her! The lady running the karaoke event said in all her years, she’d never had anyone perform their own song. Tory was all smiles.
After karaoke, we returned to our RV and had a family movie night with ice cream. The kitchen table converts into Aden’s bed and is the perfect spot for all four of us to snuggle up and watch TV together. Until Aden is ready fo bed, that is… and then everybody has to get out!

Sunday morning, I woke up before the rest of the family to workout in the Wekiva Falls gym. That’s one perk of staying in a bigger resort — more amenities! — and this gym was super nice! It was kinda freaky walking there by myself in the dark (lots of Florida animal sounds I am not familiar with!), but it was worth it to have this fancy spot all to myself.
We planned to kayak the Wakiva Falls River that morning, but it was starting to rain and the resort wouldn’t rent the kayaks to us. So, we packed up & moved onto our final destination — Fort Myers.
